The Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association (HSSA) has launched a programme of events aimed at introducing the maritime profession to high school students with the goal of attracting competent young people to the maritime profession and the shipping industry in general. The programme was launched, October 17, with an informative event on the “Possibilities and career prospects of young people in the maritime industry”. Keynote speakers were Maria Lekakou, associate professor at University of the Aegean, who presented the career paths in the shipping industry, and George Vlachos, president of Panhellenic Masters & Mates Union (Pemen) who focused on the advantages and the contemporary challenges of the maritime profession. Lekakou highlighted that in other European countries relevant informative events are conducted in a systematic way, within the context of national campaigns aimed at attracting young people to the maritime profession. Vlachos stressed the continuation of the maritime tradition of Greece is the responsibility of all involved in the industry. HSSA’s vp and its treasurer,Vasilis Terzis and Andreas Vamvakaris, respectively, also shared personal experiences gained during their career and the development in industry. HSSA’s secretary general, George Alexandratos was event moderator.
