On 1 June 2015 the Port of Antwerp introduced a discount to seagoing ships showing reduced emissions of particulates, which can be obtained by the installation of scrubbers.

Ships using LNG are also eligible for a discount. The gas tanker M/S “Sefarina” was the first ship to obtain such a discount because it uses a dual fuel engine that can run on both gasoil and LNG. Mid-September the ship was also the first to be bunkered with LNG in the port of Antwerp: a truck collected LNG in Zeebrugge and carried out a so-called truck-to-ship bunkering in Antwerp.

The reduction in port dues amounts to 20% for ships powered by LNG. Together with the Environmental Ship Index discount the total reduction may run to 30%. The discount for ships with scrubbers is equal to 15%. The current percentages are set to be reduced to 10% (LNG) and 5% (scrubbers) by 2017
