For more than eight decades, the Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association (HSSA) has represented Greek shortsea shipping, strengthening European connectivity, enhancing trade competitiveness, and supporting sustainable maritime growth.
Founded in 1940, the Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association (HSSA) has over 80 years of continuous presence and contribution to Greek and European maritime affairs.
The maritime industry is entering a new era shaped by decarbonization, digital transformation, geopolitical shifts, and evolving regulatory frameworks.
In this dynamic environment, HSSA actively represents its members while contributing to constructive policy dialogue and responsible sectoral development.
Today, HSSA serves as the primary representative body of Greek shortsea shipping, promoting:
Shortsea shipping enhances the competitiveness of European trade by providing efficient, cost-effective maritime transport solutions.
It maintains essential transport connections between mainland Europe and island or peripheral regions, ensuring uninterrupted access to goods and services.
By moving large volumes of cargo efficiently, shortsea shipping significantly reduces the cost of transporting goods and commodities across Europe.
It relieves pressure from land-based transport networks, reducing road congestion and supporting a more balanced, multimodal transport system.
The Hellenic Shortsea Promotion Centre (SPC Greece) has assumed the Presidency of the European Shortsea Network (ESN), effective 1 January 2025.
SPC Greece, founded in 1998, is a founding member of the ESN and has hosted its Permanent Secretariat since 2020.
Operating under the Union of Shortsea Shipowners (EENMA), SPC Greece is responsible for monitoring and supporting the implementation of EU shortsea shipping policies at national and European level. Having previously held the Presidency twice, SPC Greece undertakes this role during a critical period marked by regulatory developments and the green transition.
